Goji and Allergic diseases

What is an Allergy?
You may not realize it, but your body is under constant attack by outside forces. Normally your immune system respond to hostile foreign invaders – such as bacteria and viruses – by painting them with specific proteins called antibodies. These antibodies act as beacons, signaling specialized immune cells to rush to the site of infection so that they can disarm and destroy the attackers before they can cause any harm to the body.

Sometimes the same series of reactions is inexplicably triggered by harmless everyday substances. This condition is know as allergy, and the offending substance is called an allergen. Each time you come into contact with with an allergen, certain cells in the bogy release chemical substances (such as histamine and leukotrienes) which results in one or more of the symptoms be associate with allergy: redness, swelling, itchy eyes, running nose and breathing difficulties . This abnormal response is termed an allergic reaction.

Allergy Fast Facts

  • Allergies affect as many as 50 million people in the
    United States.

  • Heredity plays a key role in the development of allergies

  • Allergic diseases are the sixth leading cause of chronic diseases.

  • It is estimated that that increased absenteeism and reduced productivity due to allergies costs U.S companies more than $250 million per year.

  • Dog and cat allergens are found in all homes in the United States, not just those of pet owners.

Primary Causes of Allergy

Ingestants
Ingestants are substances that enter the body by mouth.

These include:

  • Food – The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network identifies eight foods that are responsible for than 90% of all food-allergic reactions. Thse are milk, egg, peanut, tree nut(walnut, cashew etc.) fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat. Food allergies are most common in children. There digestive systems are more likely to absorb large protein particle that can cause allergies.
  • Drugs – Drug allergy usually occurs after the first exposure and can get much worse with each subsequent exposure. Common drugs that may cause an allergic reaction are antibiotics, insulin, vaccines, and aspirin.

Inhalants
Inhalants are any protein substances breathed in through the nose and mouth. There are different kinds of inhalant allergens, including pollen, mould spores, animal dander and house dust mites.

Contact Allergens
Contact allergens are caused by allergens entering the body through the skin. They include powders, lotions, fragrances, some metals (such as clothing snaps or cheap jewelry), latex, household cleaners, and soap residue on clothing.

Other Causes
Other non-specific factors that may aggravate an allergy include changes in humidity, temperature (especially cold), infections, and second hand smoke.

Signs and symptoms of allergies

Here are the most familiar symptoms of allergy:

  • Runny nose
  • Pressure in the nose and cheeks
  • Watery eyes
  • Ear fullness and popping
  • Itchy Nose, Eyes and Roof of Mouth
  • Dark circles under the Eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Hives
  • Stuffy nose

To that list, allergy authority Judy Tidwell adds these important, but lesser known symptoms of allergic disease.

  • Absentmindedness
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Asthma
  • Burning eyes
  • Constipation
  • Coughing
  • Dermatitis
  • Depression
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Distraction
  • Dizziness
  • Eczema
  • Flushing
  • Headaches
  • Heart palpitations
  • Impaired sense of smell
  • Irritability / behavioral problems
  • Itchy skin
  • Joint aches
  • Muscles pains
  • Ear fullness and popping
  • Nausea
  • Postnasal drip
  • Rapid Pulse
  • Shortness of breath
  • Skin rashes
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Throat hoarseness
  • Tingling nose
  • Tiredness
  • Vertigo
  • Vomiting
  • Wheezing

How can I avoid Allergens?

Follow these sound strategies to avoid reactions to common allergens:

Pollen
Shower or bathe before bedtime to wash of pollen and other allergens in your hair and your skin. Try to limit time outdoors in pollen season, especially on dry windy days. Keep windows and doors shut, and use an airconditioner in your home and in your car.

Mold
You can reduce the amount of mold in your house by removing houseplants and by frequently cleaning shower curtains, bathroom windows, damp walls, areas with dry rot, and indoor trash cans. Use a mixture and water and chlorine bleach to kill mold. Also don’t carpet bathrooms or other damp rooms, and use mold proof paint instead of wallpaper. Reducing the humidity in your home to 50% or less can also help. (a dehumidifier can help you do this)

Pet Dander
If your allergies are severe, you may need to find another home for your pets, or at least keep them outside. Cat and dog dander often collects in house dust and takes four weeks or more to die down, so a short term trial of removing your pet from your home may not help.

Dust and Dust Mites
Many allergens are found in house dust, especially dust mites. House dust mites are tiny living creatures found in bedding, mattresses, carpeting, upholstered furniture and stuffed animals. They feast on flakes on dead skin cells shed by humans. Maintaining an indoor humidity below 50% will greatly reduce the possibility of mites being a problem, as will the use of air-purifiers, non-allergic bedding and HEPA filters on vacuum cleaners.

Fight Allergy naturally with Goji

It is important to remember that allergy is not a result of either a overactive or sluggish immune function; it is caused by immune abnormalities. Fortunately, traditional Asian medicine, has long demonstrated that abnormal immune response can be treated successfully, without the need for harsh drugs.

In Asia, the Goji berry has been used as a primary allergy therapy for centuries. The noted ethnobotanist, Dr. James A Duke classifies Goji as a immunomodulator – an enhancing substance that can balance and normalize abnormal immune response.

Goji normalizes Immune Function

In a study of Goji reported in the Journal of the Beijing Medical University (1992), it was noted that Goji reduced antibodies associated with allergy-type reactions, which was presumed to be accomplished through the mechanisms of promoting CD8(+) T-cells and regulating Cytokines.

In a review of research appearing in Recent Advances of Chinese Herbal Drugs, Dr. Zhou Jinhuang points out that Goji’s master molecule polysaccharides enhance cell-mediated and humoral immune responses, increasing normal activities of T-cells, and natural killer cells.

Usual Dosage Level
For all allergic conditions research suggests a daily usage of 30 to 60ml of high quality standardized Goji juice taken with meals.
