Longevity
Thoughts about longevity have often gone much further than recognising the fundamental brevity of human life and have often incorporated thoughts about ways to extend it. Longevity has been a subject not only for the scientific world but also for travel and science fiction writers.
What is known is that there are certain regions of the Earth where the inhabitants apparently experience greater longevity than others, and this is not mere speculation, but a fact that can be seen with the naked eye. These regions include the Ningxia and Xinjiang regions of Northwest China and Tibet, where a recent national census has recently found and reported that the number of residents known to have reached the age of 100 years exceeds the national average by some 400%. These local residents have claimed that the secret to their amazing health lies in the locally grown Goji berry.
The people who live in these regions have known for thousands of years about the secret of the Goji berry, also known as the Chinese Wolfberry, and it has been consumed for centuries to stock up the body’s essential spirit and promote longevity. The berry is even honoured by local farmers with a two-week long Goji Festival. Since time immemorial the Chinese people have looked to three specific tonics for good health – Ginseng, Tzi and Goji. Tests have shown that t he Goji berry is exceptionally high in Lycium barbarum polysaccharides, compound polysaccharides comprising six monosaccharide chains that are linked with polypeptide chains.
These components are known to have a significant effect in enhancing the immune system. The berries are used to treat cancer, normalise blood pressure, balance blood sugar levels, as an anti-inflammatory and as a neuroprotective agent for retinal ganglion cell degeneration. It is no wonder that this longevity food is one of the most sought after new foods in Hollywood
