Anti aging food
The Chinese Wolfberry, also known as the Goji berry, is an anti aging food that originally came from the Ningxia and Xinjiang regions of Northwest China and Tibet. It is a member of the family Solanaceae (which also includes the potato, tomato, eggplant, deadly nightshade, chilli pepper, and tobacco). It is now grown in many regions of the world, being first introduced into the United Kingdom in 1730, where it is known as the Duke of Argyll's Tea Tree. Only in China, however, is there significant commercial cultivation, where there has been extensive cultivation along the fertile floodplains of the Yellow River for more than 600 years. It has developed a reputation as an anti aging food, many people living in the area of production reaching between 120 and 150 years of age.
This anti aging food is presently available in South Africa in three forms:
- Goji Juice, which is 100% pure juice from ripened Goji Berries
- Sundried Goji Berries – hand-picked sundried Goji Berries that are exceptionally high in polysaccharides
- Goji-LPB-X – an extract from the Goji Berry in capsule form
There is a pilot scheme growing the Goji berry in operation in the Bathurst region of the Eastern Cape. The Goji berry is exceptionally high in Lycium barbarum polysaccharides, compound polysaccharides comprising six monosaccharide chains (arabinose, rhamnose, xylose, mannose, galactose and glucose) that are linked with polypeptide chains. These constituents have been shown to have a significant effect in enhancing the immune system, the treatments including cancer prevention, normalizing blood pressure, balancing blood sugar levels anti-inflammatory and as a neuroprotective agent for retinal ganglion cell degeneration, these among several other treatments. This anti aging food is one of the most sought after new foods in Hollywood.
